I see so much value in having a mentor. It is so beneficial to be able to ask someone else about their lived experiences. To get a picture of someone else’s roadmap and see just how possible your goals are to accomplish. It is nice to know that you are not alone and others are or have had the same struggles.

There is a leadership program in our community that my current employer sponsored me to take. It was an amazing opportunity with a real emphasis on the community programs and the impacts that leadership can bring. We are all leaders and can mentor those around us. I have had a mentor and have been a mentor and there is much to gain and learn from these relationships.

The best thing you can do for a young hire is help them find their mentor (you don’t need to be everyone’s!). The impact a good mentor can have on their career can be life changing. Many managers are not great, especially with the lack of manager training these days, a solid mentor can help these young people navigate crappy managers and continue growing and excelling in their careers.
