What do you wish your new-to-you-manager asked you about in your first meeting(s)?

Getting to know the creative strengths of your team is very valuable so ask employees to come to the weekly meetings with some new ideas on how to improve the team. It is key that they get to know you as well so share some of your creative ideas as well.

Your experience and expertise, your ideas for improvement, your personal goals and how they fit within the team’s goals, your expectations for your manager (e.g. communication, feedback, etc.).

If the new manager is new to the organization/department, I would want the manager to have one-on-one meetings (coffee, lunch, etc) with the employees to get to know the employees on a personal level and build trust within the new team. I would also want the employees to share what they think is going well, what could be improved upon, and if their is anything the employee needs to make their job more efficient.

I wish my new-to-me manager have ask about my preferred working style, strengths, and career aspirations. Understanding these will foster a more tailored and effective collaboration, enabling me to contribute meaningfully to the team’s success while aligning with my personal growth goals.

Where would you like to see yourself with in the company in X (1,2,3) years? What specials skills do you have/if any that aren’t being utilized that you think would bring value?

Do you have any questions about my background/interests that you would like to know about me?

I wish that a new manager would ask about the history behind the distribution of duties. Why were certain duties assigned and what skills and strengths needed were behind the decision.

Get to know my personalities and capabilities. To encourage me to be a better version of myself. To help and guide me to reach my goal instead of discouraging me. A constructive criticism is fine but a side comment disguising it as a criticism is not. It’s more discouraging hearing those comments like you thought they are encouraging but the truth is they discriminating you and questioning your capability not only as a worker but as a person.

Go to lunch and get to know each other’s personalities, humor, etc…it makes communication easier if you know the person you are communicating with on a different level besides work.

If they asked about my strengths and what I enjoy most about the work. What can make my employee experience best? It would set a positive tone and show they’re interested in leveraging my skills effectively. What is working well, what does not work well?
