There are so many…payroll compliance knowledge, time management, problem solving, communication, and efficient in payroll software technology to name a few.
The ability to explain complex calculations to employees with the objective to educate. – So many times I’ve overheard pay explanations that fly right over the heads of lay people who doesn’t have prior pay knowledge. There’s lots in payroll that can be taught but that’s one skill that you can’t fake.
I totally agree. Payroll needs to understand pay beginning to end at a high level and be able to explain it to the employee at a much lower level.
We tend to forget how much we actually do know until we see the dumb founded look of an employee as we try and explain what is happening on their pay statement.
Attention to detail, verbal and written communication/listening skills, a good sense of humor, empathy, and to never take things personally – let it go.
Techhnical, Analytical and interpersonal skills. The ability to work under pressure. Being a people person, the human element is the most important part for me.
