I wholeheartedly agree that unplugging during your personal downtime and taking time off is critical to the health of the workforce. For your mind to operate at its full capacity, it needs to rest and reset. Being overworked and worn out has a direct negative impact to productivity, creativity, and temperament. When my work day is done, on the weekends, or on vacation, I do not engage in any work activities. I give 100% when I am working but redirect my focus to my family, my hobbies, and personal activities when I am not working.
5 months agoThat’s awesome Denise and I totally agree with you and the article! I have found at my workplace that my team is very good at keeping work out of vacation. Due to strict security policies my email is not accessible unless I bring my laptop home and VPN in, unless I have a work cell phone which is not encouraged. This makes it easier to disconnect and focus on family and rejuvenation. The people I work with respect time off and unless there is an emergency, do not contact those that are away. A plan is made for extended leaves for coverage so that work can still progress. Also, policies around vacation carry over are strictly enforced so that time is taken. It’s nice to feel that time off is accepted and expected so that you aren’t feeling guilty about being away.
