In recent years, remote work has experienced a significant shift from being a sporadic arrangement to becoming a mainstream workstyle. However, as it continues to prevail, the need to foster a solid and connected remote company culture has never been more crucial.
Remote work can indeed be a success, but it requires intentional efforts to maintain a sense of community, collaboration, and belonging among remote team members. This is where leaders and managers need to step in and apply strategies to make it happen. Here are 6 ideas to put into practice!
1. Clear Communication Channels and Guidelines
Effective communication lies at the heart of any successful remote team. In a remote setup, team members are dispersed across different locations, making clear communication essential to avoid misunderstandings and promote a collaborative environment.
Jim Rohn’s quote shows how critical effective communication is to avoid misunderstandings. In addition, remote work can lead to feelings of isolation, but fostering open communication can help bridge the gap.
Solution
Encourage regular check-ins, virtual coffee breaks, and transparent communication channels. Also, make sure to leverage video conferencing tools for face-to-face interactions, enabling team members to build stronger connections.
2. Foster Trust and Autonomy
Remote work thrives when there is a foundation of trust between team members and management. According to a survey by Owl Labs, “1 in 2 workers (49%) feel managers view those in the office as harder working and more trustworthy than their remote counterparts. And 48% of workers are concerned that working remotely means they have less of a say at work and will miss out on opportunities”.
Solution
Ensure to give them autonomy in their work and avoid proximity biases and micromanagement. Making them feel trusted is also essential to their engagement and motivation.
3. Embrace Flexibility
Flexibility is one of the key advantages of remote work. Remote employees often appreciate the ability to balance their work and personal lives. Allowing employees to set their own schedules, within reason, can boost morale and job satisfaction.
Solution
Foster a culture of flexibility where outcome is valued over availability. Another important aspect to remember is that Canada is one of the largest countries in the world with many time zones, so not all remote employees will be able to work simultaneously.
4. Recognize and Celebrate Achievements
Recognizing and celebrating achievements becomes even more crucial in remote work environments. Remote team members may not have the same visibility as those in a physical office. This is why recognition and rewards play a vital role in remote company culture.
Solution
Implement a system for acknowledging achievements and milestones through virtual celebrations, personalized notes, public recognition during team meetings, and even small tokens of appreciation.
5. Cultivate a Virtual Watercooler
Physical office spaces naturally facilitate casual interactions that contribute to company culture. In remote settings, recreating these interactions requires creativity. Virtual watercooler chats, where team members discuss non-work-related topics, can foster a sense of camaraderie.
Solution
Organize online trivia games, virtual escape rooms, and collaborative projects that encourage teamwork and creativity. These activities promote a sense of camaraderie despite physical distances.
6. Invest in Personal and Professional Development
Remote work offers opportunities for continuous skill development. “Encouraging employees in and out of the office to pursue greatness in their personal and professional lives can lead to higher engagement and motivation at work,” according to TINYpulse.
Solution
Allocate resources for online courses, workshops, and skill-building initiatives that align with their career aspirations. Provide access to online training that enhances employees' expertise in HR, payroll, accounting, and finance to encourage cross-functional learning in order to foster a culture of innovation.
